Long before a building reaches its site, it begins here – in our East Meon workshop. This is where timber is measured, cut, assembled, and refined. Where light moves across grain and structure begins to take form. The scent of freshly worked wood lingers in the air, and the pace is steady. Nothing is rushed. Working in timber demands patience. It rewards care.
For Luke, founder and carpenter at Connection Timber Buildings, building with timber has never been just a job. Raised in a family of carpenters, he grew up understanding the value of making something properly. From summer holidays working alongside his father to completing his apprenticeship, craftsmanship has always been part of his life. Timber felt like a natural material to build with – honest, strong, and simple in the best way.
A Space to Build Well
The workshop is one of the biggest steps the business has taken so far. Bringing everything under one roof allows the team to refine every detail before a structure ever leaves for the site. Panels are pre-built and checked. Joinery is shaped with precision. Materials are selected carefully – C24-grade timber, FSC-certified and responsibly sourced. Foundations are designed to minimise environmental impact, often using ground screws or screw piles instead of concrete. This approach strengthens consistency and allows the work to travel further afield without compromising standards. It also creates space for creativity – for exploring new materials, new techniques, and new ways of building that respect both tradition and innovation. The core of the team remains carpenters. That matters. Experience sits at the centre of every project, supported by research, design, and a constant desire to improve.
A New Chapter, The Same Foundations
As the scale of projects has grown, so too has the direction of the company. What began as South Downs Garden Rooms has naturally evolved into Connection Timber Buildings – a name that better reflects what has always been central: connection.
Connection between people and the spaces they inhabit. Between craft and contemporary design. Between buildings and the landscapes they sit within.
The values have not changed. Each structure is still shaped by hand, guided by experience, and built to endure.
Why It Matters
Timber has a quiet way of influencing how we feel in a space. It softens light. It carries warmth. It connects interiors back to the natural world outside. Luke often says he wants clients to use their finished space exactly as they imagined – to feel relaxed, settled, and proud of what has been built for them. Whether it’s a garden studio, a family home, or a hospitality structure, the goal is the same: to create an environment that supports the way people want to live and work. That intention is shaped long before the building reaches its site.
